The iconic production A Song To..., which has as many as 50 people on the stage, is back, 11 years later – a unique production in a Norwegian and Nordic context.
A Song To... has been presented at several prestigious venues across the world, engaging countless local communities along the way. Since 2005, Mia Habib has created twelve new productions in collaboration with Dansens Hus, and now audiences have the opportunity to revisit one of them. A song to... is the choreography of a mass movement in both senses of the word: the Norwegian choreographer brings 16 professional dancers and up to 50 non-professionals onto the stage, choreographing their naked bodies as pure materiality
In today’s world, masses of bodies invade our lives and shape the world more than ever before. They protest, flee, grieve, express joy, and support one another. In A Song To..., this massive body is guided by an invisible yet universal circle of life. The performance’s patterns explore the vibrating sensation that circularity can create. As the bodies run in circles, they stage a protest and, at the same time, a form of invocation. The act of running is a recurring element and over time creates physical empathy with the audience—through the multitude of people, the sound of their feet, their presence, their breath, and their voices. By combining unsettling images and feelings about human masses and bodily vulnerability with theories of swarm intelligence, the performance creates an inner tension—both unifying and disturbing at once.
