Dance film — and some live dancing — with Tabanka.

Here’s your chance to experience the fantastic dancers of Tabanka on film! The dancers have spent their time well, along with Tabanka’s artistic leader and choreographer, Thomas «Talawa» Prestø. Together they have made a dance film. The film will be released at Dansens Hus — with an introduction by Thomas «Talawa», some pieces of live music, song, and, of course, a little bit of dancing too.

In That Voudou That We Do Tabanka plays with West-African ritualistic, rhythmic roots, associated with Ifa and the Voudou traditions that followed African slaves across the Atlantic. These traditions are the origin of Jazz, Soul, Funk, Hip Hop, House, Salsa, Samba, Rumba, Reggae, and other styles of music. That Voudou That We Do unfolds in a magical space, choreographed for the canvas — a space that allows for a magic where ancient traditions can manifest in new, playful ways.

«Ancient power — modern use»! Using this slogan as its basic philosophy, Tabanka creates contemporary art, applying rich, rhythmic traditions of movement, from Africa and the Caribbean. The popular company is driven by a fierce societal engagement, creating an acknowledging, affirming space for bodies rich in melanin. Their artistic expression is a generous one, in use of rhythm, movement, color, energy — even generous rage.
