Can we illustrate ‘whiteness’ if a white body embodies what is typically ‘black’? This is what Jonas Øren wants to explore, when he, as a white, Norwegian, homosexual man, puts his own privileges on display. Hybris: Choreographing Whiteness debates whether black femininity has the power to influence queer performative culture, and whether this is a deliberate strategy – too imbalanced a means of self-confirmation, resistance and solidarity. Has whiteness been uncritically shaped and choreographed out of a need for attitude and strength? 
Øren has been exploring the body as a meaningful tool since PRESENTATIONS – Performing the self in the selfie society (2017-19) – the final project in his Master’s degree in dance from the Oslo National Academy of the Arts. Can strategic choreography of the subjective, personal body – even when it performs clichéd characters from popular culture – communicate anything new about – and perhaps even transform entrenched stereotypes?
The production has been partly developed through an artist-in-residence programme at Dansearena nord in Hammerfest. As part of the project, a rap EP has been produced by Oslo Records and PGMG, as well as a printed journal, with contributions from people including influential melanin-rich, female personalities. 
On the stage, Øren explores the concert format by using rap texts and a language influenced by pop-rap, in interaction with dance.
