Hmadcha
The Moroccan choreographer and dancer Taoufiq Izeddiou imagines a place beyond the material world, a place where rhythm and movement blend together. The title of the production, HMADCHA, is the name of a Sufi brotherhood that was founded at the end of the 17th century in Morocco. Inspired by this group’s traditional spiritual festivities, the production combines the traditional with the contemporary: trance and a series of breathing techniques become a practice for collectively emerging from a crisis. On the stage, we meet nine male dancers at different stages of their lives. Together, they form a collective, rhythmic body, which in a minimalistic set, creates space for both rapid movement and exhaustion. In other words: a ritual of transcendence.
