How to Solo – Solo in Conversation

On Wednesday, 11 February, Dansens Hus, PRODA and Dansens Dager invite you to How to Solo – a workshop led by Tone Kittelsen. After the workshop, we invite you to lunch and a conversation with a group of dance artists who work with the solo format in different ways.

How to Solo

How to Solo is a concept where we explore solo work together, led by Tone Kittelsen. The concept is rooted in her curiosity about the solo format and a desire to have others with whom to share her practice. We work with intuitive dance—the kind that cannot be planned, but must be allowed to emerge in and of itself.

In How to Solo, we work alone, but together. The solo is the dance you do on your own—the one that comes from yourself and influences your own and/or others’ work. It is an open space with a low threshold for working in front of one another and sharing intuitive ideas.

During the workshop, it is important that we show, take, or dance the floor for one another. We practice spontaneous dance—the kind we haven’t rehearsed, but which lies latent within us. What arises there and then, in the moment. We practice allowing our dance to take up space and be given space, whether it is new, finished, half-finished, or only polished in thought. The physical experience our bodies carry.

Solo in Conversation

What makes someone choose to work solo—is it an active artistic choice or a practical necessity? How does solo dance come into being? Which factors guide and are decisive when starting a solo project?

Together with dance artists who are well acquainted with the solo format, they will ask each other questions and open up reflections on working with solo as a form of expression. We gather in a circle, and toward the end of the conversation the audience is invited to ask questions and share their own reflections.

The conversation is moderated by Steffi Lund and Tone Kittelsen.
