4/4 is Antony Hamilton’s blueprint for choreographic precision and physical endurance. Eight dancers perform a stark symphony of mesmerising movement against the backdrop of minimalist design. As episode after episode builds upon the last, quartets and duets converge and diverge in ever more hypnotic configurations. The individuality of the eight dancers comes to the fore despite the boundaries of choreographic restraint. With backgrounds in Krump, freestyle Hip-Hop, House and contemporary dance techniques, the diversity in the dancers' artistic lineages, coupled with Hamilton's striking craftsmanship, creates an utterly distinct and uniquely Australian dance work. Antony Hamilton is an award-winning Australian dance artist with an international reputation. His choreographic work explores the elemental and primal nature of the body, setting it in the context of intersecting narratives that explore the past, present and future. He often uses a sophisticated fusion of movement, sound and visual design to imagine new worlds, and develops new choreographic languages to inhabit them. Hamilton's work reflects a contemporary fascination with dance, new technology, history and storytelling, as well as established and emerging subcultures. In 2019, he became artistic director and managing director of Chunky Move. His broad experience as a dancer and choreographer is rooted in classical ballet, postmodern contemporary dance and global street dance originating in North America. This broad artistic base enables Chunky Move to cross different dance environments and styles, building pathways and new languages that connect people and reflect contemporary cultural practices.
Chunky Move is an Australian company known for bold, cross-genre contemporary dance. Led by Executive Directors Antony Hamilton and Kristy Ayre, Chunky Move plays a pivotal role in the development of dance in Australia and beyond. Artists and audiences are at the heart of the company, reflected in a dense program of major works, commissions, residencies and educational opportunities. Over the past 28 years, Chunky Move has performed in 134 cities at 150 festivals around the world, engaged over 376 artists and independent creators and thrilled over 600,000 audiences.
