Mother and son together on stage.

In The Power (of) The Fragile we meet two bodies on the stage. One is vigorous and young, the other vulnerable and older. The production is a poetic treatment of the natural cycle between life and death, a work in which both the visual and audio sides are built around the physical presence of a man and a woman, mother and child, Mohamed and Mimouna. Toukabri’s focus is on finding a safe place, and he believes that the safest place of all is our mother’s belly, a place outside of concepts and theories. Various tableaux illustrate the different phases of life, like childhood, youth, adult life, ageing and closure, and symbolic figures like the Goddess take the audience on a visual and futuristic journey. Mohamed Toukabri is inspired by symbolic visual arts, danse macabre, nature, holy places, futuristic films and miniature art.

Mohamed Toukabri lives and works in Brussels, but was born and brought up in Tunisia. He started breakdancing as a 12-year-old, and eventually began studying dance at the acclaimed P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. As a dancer, he has worked with people like Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Damien Jalet, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Aicha M’Barak and Hafiz Dhaou, and he was also a member of Needcompany (2013–2018). His first self-produced piece The Upside Down Man was presented at Dansens Hus in January 2020, and toured across much of Europe.
