The workshop provides insight into how Karhutanssi Dance Company works on the development of new Kven dance and music. Kven dance comes from a rich and ancient cultural tradition, but Kven contemporary dance is young and at the beginning of its flourishing. There will be both traditional dance, improvisational tasks and repertoire from the performance Vaimovoima, which will have its world premiere at Dansens Hus in late August. Choreographer Astrid Serine Hoel leads the workshop and Hilja Balsnes Løvvik is involved as a musician.

Biography:

Since 2017, Astrid Serine Hoel has worked on mapping the Kven dance tradition, a work that has not been done before. In 2023, she choreographed Norway's first Kven dance performance, and in 2025 she helped officially found the first Kven dance company. Karhutanssi Dance Company is based in Sør-Varanger, in the very north-east of Norway on the border with Finland and Russia, and the company is nomadic with a strong touring focus. As artistic director of the company, Astrid Serine is committed to strengthening cooperation across borders in the north, she wants to decentralize the art of dance, and contribute to enriching the diversity of perspectives and stories that are conveyed on stages in Meänmaa. (Meänmaa is the traditional living areas of the Kven people, which today belong to Norway, Sweden, Finland and Russia.)
