WHY SOLO? is a space for practical reflection around solo dance. We invite artists to present their methods and approaches to the solo dance format, both through conversation, presentation and practice. The room is then opened up and the studio stage at Dansens Hus is made available as a work space where participants can work freely.

Steffi Lund presents her solo practice: 

Having primarily created solo works throughout a long artistic career, I will begin this session by discussing why I prefer the solo format and how I have developed methods to maintain focus while working alone in the studio.

I will then share my "gold-standard" practice, which serves multiple functions: it acts as a warm-up and an improvisation practice; it is invaluable for anyone wishing to perform solo improvisational pieces; and through this practice, material for choreography or works-in-progress often emerges spontaneously.

We will dive straight into this practice, which will take about 45 minutes, leaving time at the end for reflection, questions, and sharing.

Bio:
Born in 1961, Steffi Lund completed a four-year higher education program in New Dance and choreography at the Amsterdam University of the Arts, specifically the School for New Dance Development (SNDO), between 1984 and 1988. She is a member of the Norwegian Association of Dance Artists and a recipient of the Norwegian State Grant for Established Artists. Since 1989, she has initiated, managed, and performed in her own projects, with the solo performance serving as her primary medium. She writes texts, ranging from the poetic to the narrative (with a stand-up sensibility), and works extensively with the voice in an intimate "chamber" format. Her work operates at the intersection of dance, theater, and performance, often (or perhaps always?) from a queer perspective. Her pieces range from the meticulously composed to the openly improvised. She enjoys using comedy as a tool and developing physical characters.
