About:
Dance artist Maja Roel presents Drømmefakultetet (DF), a research-based performing arts company that exists on the border between fiction and reality. She has run DF since 2020 and serves as both a fellow and dean. Each semester she develops her own program of practices, syllabus lists and a storytelling practice that ensures the quality of the conversation she has with herself. In addition, she invites different artists to exchange, interact and come together to bring new artistic visions and ideas to life.
She sees artistry as a utopian root system where performance series build on each other and develop in relation to ongoing practices. The working method enables artistic universes to grow over time, and the distinction between process and production to be erased. DF should function as an oasis of time that creates space for relationships, immersion and reflection.
Biography:
Maja Roel has worked for 20 years in the free field as a creative and performing dance artist, based in Oslo. Her background is from the Oslo Academy of Dance and the Amsterdam Academy of Performing Arts.
Roel's choreographic work is at the intersection of dance, theater and performance and often takes place in public spaces and specific contexts such as on a bus, an island, a helipad or a disused shopping mall. The performances she has created have explored themes such as gender, market liberalism and the playful human being. From 2021-2024 she worked on the nomadic performing arts series UTOPIA which has been created in dialogue with different places and contexts. By moving art outside traditional contexts, she sees how fiction and reality influence each other, and how encounters between artists, audience and place can generate new artistic expressions.
From 2025 she started the development of a new performance series; “Drag as Ecological Practice”, which uses drag as a transformative force to connect identity, body and ecology.
