STOR kunst for alle barn

Dansens Hus is a programming venue that presents around 45 high-quality Norwegian and international productions each year. Here you will find a diverse range of artistic voices and expressions that reflect the world we live in today. The productions we present on our stages are created by both Norwegian and international choreographers and companies — from emerging talents to leading international names. Dansens Hus is also a place for the whole family: we present performances for children of all ages, from newborns and up.

Norway has a strong tradition of creating dance performances for the very youngest audiences (ages 0–3 and 3–6). It began with a Norwegian initiative called Klangfugl (1999–2003), which developed into the EU project Glitterbird(2003–2006). Through these projects, many European choreographers were inspired to develop their own artistic work for the youngest audience group.

Dansens Hus was established in 2024 and, from the very beginning, presented baby dance performances. The response from the audience was overwhelming. But over time, fewer choreographers created new work for the very youngest — possibly because funding was no longer earmarked for this target group.

GREAT Art for Small Children / Part 1

Financial support from the Savings Bank Foundation DNB made it possible to support three choreographers in developing new performances for the age group 0–3 under the umbrella project BIG Art for Small Children. From 2016–2019, three productions were developed, presented, and toured:

    1. Lulla by dybwikdans
    2. Sans og Samling by Becker/Fiksdal/Langård
    3. We Are Symphony by Oslo Koreografiske

These companies were co-produced by Dansens Hus through funding, promotion, rehearsal space, and technical support. All premieres were held at Dansens Hus. In addition, each company received support and guidance from two highly experienced experts in this field who had both led Klangfugl and Glitterbird: Professor of Choreography Leif Hernes and Associate Professor Ellen Os, both affiliated with the Department of Early Childhood Education at OsloMet.

The companies retain the rights to their works and are free to tour them independently. The results of this project were highly successful — and many of the productions are still touring today.

GREAT Art for Small Children / Part 2

After the success of the first round, we once again applied for and received funding from the Savings Bank Foundation DNB, enabling us to support three new works for children aged 0–6 from 2020–2023.

    The productions are:

    1. kinShips by Øy
    2. Soft Machine by Oslo Koreografiske
    3. Kaleidoscope by Shi Pratt

Below, you will find images, trailers, and further information about all of the productions.
We hope that all six performances will enjoy long and happy lives — and that they will reach many little ones aged 0–6!

    Enjoy!
