What is Dansens Hus?
Dansens Hus naturally presents dance performances, but we do much more as well.
We present
Norwegian and international dance performances of high quality. With us, you will find a diversity of voices and artistic expressions relevant to our time. The performances we present are created by Norwegian and international choreographers and companies, ranging from emerging artists to internationally renowned star choreographers. Dansens Hus is a venue for the whole family, with performances for children from 0 years and up. Most performances take place on our own stages, but we also present performances outdoors and at Rommen Scene.
We are located
in the Vulkan area of Oslo, in a former industrial site by the Akerselva river. The Main Stage seats 318 audience members, and the Studio Stage accommodates a maximum of 77 spectators. Dansens Hus is open one hour before and two hours after performances, and is a perfect place to spend time with friends in beautiful surroundings overlooking the Akerselva.
We communicate
knowledge about and a love for dance. We offer a supplementary program alongside performances where you can learn more about dance, or dive deeper into specific works or artistic practices. For the curious, our website provides a rich selection of background material in the form of texts, films, and more.
We develop
dance art and support dance artists at all stages of their careers. We contribute both practically and financially to the production and presentation of dance performances through co-productions. The Choreography Laboratory is our annual development platform for emerging dance artists. We also offer professional development opportunities through workshops, masterclasses, meetings, and seminars. Finally, we work to increase touring and employment opportunities nationally and internationally through various networks and collaborations.
We invite
community and activities for diverse audiences. We work to ensure that more people can experience enriching dance performances, and that audiences at Dansens Hus reflect the diversity of Norway’s population. We present performances outdoors in ever new locations, regularly show performances at Rommen Scene, and run outreach and activity programs. We are also engaged in projects aimed at increasing inclusion in the cultural sector.
We tour
dance performances across Norway through the touring network Dansenett Norge. Dansenett Norge is a collaboration between Dansens Hus and four regional dance competence centers.
We collaborate
with partners in the dance field both nationally and internationally. In Norway, we collaborate with Dansenett Norge, regional dance competence centers, and a number of festivals—including CODA Oslo International Dance Festival, ULTIMA, and Oslo World. Internationally, we are partners in the Nordic dance platform Ice Hot, and members of the European Dance Development Network and Aerowaves.
We do all this because
art (and dance art) is essential. Art both enriches and challenges us; it plays a fundamental role in democracy and serves as a carrier of freedom of expression. Dance is expression in motion, with a unique physical, visual, and emotional power—a universal language that can build bridges between cultures and bring people together.
