Dance House Norway is proud to present Finland’s warm, humoristic and wise choreographer Jyrki Karttunen for the third time.
But first, a warning to those who are expecting to see the iconic disco scenes from “Saturday Night Fever”: the production “Days of Disco” by the Karttunen Kollektiv is not a pastiche of the sparkling past. It is, rather, an extremely personal approach by a contemporary choreographer to what is called disco.
In “Days of Disco” Jyrki Karttunen and his artistic team have drawn from the rhythms and styles of the past, but have brought them emphatically into the present. They skilfully navigate the production past the most obvious clichés connected with disco, and end up with an intimate and even tender presentation about people whose individual experiences form the building blocks of a phenomenon.
“Days of Disco” also has a very personal point of departure: Jyrki Karttunen’s desire to explore the era of his own childhood, the second half of the 1970s. This gives the production a mildly melancholic undertone: the title also stands for all the things that are remembered fondly but are gone forever, remaining only in our memories. But since this is a work by Jyrki Karttunen, the melancholy atmosphere is constantly tempered by warm-hearted humour.
